Google interview: what to expect and how to prepare
· 7 min read
Google interviews have a reputation for being demanding and highly structured. The good news: they are also fairly predictable in their logic. Understanding the evaluation criteria lets you prepare effectively rather than in the dark.
Google aims to measure four key dimensions, whatever the questions asked.
The four criteria assessed
- General cognitive ability: how you approach a new problem, not just the right answer.
- Role-related knowledge: your concrete expertise for the position.
- Leadership (emergent): your ability to move things forward and collaborate.
- “Googleyness”: your way of working, your curiosity, your integrity.
Think out loud
On problem-solving questions, Google assesses your reasoning as much as the result. Verbalize your approach: clarify the question, state assumptions, structure it, then move forward. A candidate who finds the answer without explaining it scores less than one who reasons clearly.
Behavioral questions
As everywhere, expect “Tell me about a time when…” in STAR format: collaboration, handling a disagreement, initiative, dealing with ambiguity. Prepare concrete examples centered on your personal contribution.
The technical part (if relevant)
For engineering roles, prepare algorithms, data structures and sometimes system design. For product or data roles, expect cases and analysis questions. Practice out loud, in real conditions.
Practice, again
Consistency and clarity under pressure make the difference. With JobView, run practice interviews repeatedly, work on how you structure your answers and get feedback on your clarity and reasoning.
